General Information

The James Madison University Orientation Office is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Orientation. Orientation programs at JMU include Summer Springboard, a one-day summer orientation program for students and families, Weeks of Welcome, Spring Orientation, transfer student programming, and other transition programs. The Orientation Office is also supported by a team of 50 student staff and 300 student volunteers who guarantee success of these initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Orientation will assist in the planning, coordination and implementation of Orientation programs for new students and their guests while creating continuity between Orientation and Transition programs. The Assistant Director will assist with the technical functionality of VisualZen, the online Orientation reservation system by troubleshooting issues, improving processes, and supporting user functionality. The Assistant Director will manage the departmental publications, and the virtual orientation experience that facilitate the developmental transition to the university for incoming first-year and transfer students, and their families. The Assistant Director will establish a vision and departmental plan that focuses on the transition from Admissions to Orientation which engages new students in a timely, intentional and developmentally appropriate process in relation to Orientation Programs. Additionally, the Assistant Director will supervise a team of student staff who support the basic functions of the office in customer service relating to new students, families, and campus departments interacting through email, phone, walk-in, social media, and web page chat.


Competitive candidates are
required to demonstrate the following skills:

A master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field required.
Extensive experience in a higher education setting particularly in student affairs, especially in orientation, first year and/or transfer experience programs.
Experience using technical programs such as an orientation reservation system, Photoshop, and Adobe products.
Collaboration and communication across campus with faculty and staff to implement programs.
Experience utilizing student development theory to develop, plan, and implement multi-faceted programs that balance high academic expectations with students’ social efficacy needs.
Demonstrate awareness and deep understanding of the student development and transition needs of students within today’s context.
Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student community and a pulse on the changing demographic trends within higher education.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
