*Purpose of the Position:*
Reporting to the Vice President of Community Impact, the Director of Research and Data Analytics is responsible for leading and aligning the gathering, management, and architecture of all data for United Way of Southwest Virginia’s (UWSWVA) portfolio of projects and initiatives. The Director researches and presents data that contribute to the organization’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives in the Community Impact Plan. The Director is responsible for developing monitoring and evaluation tools and processes to measure, track and report on community outcomes utilizing comprehensive community data and other information resources.
The Director will collaborate with community stakeholders to build specific partnerships for long-term results, setting priorities through facilitated discussions, and examination of education, health, and economic data. The Director is responsible for translating data and leading evaluation efforts into actionable metrics and sharing findings/learnings with both internal and external audiences. The Director will work closely with program staff to access and analyze data in support of program objectives while generating key actionable insights to inform the organization’s Community Impact Plan.
Areas of Responsibility: (Other duties may be assigned)
Establish methods to monitor and evaluate program performance; track programmatic and community level data with a focus on outcomes.
Create on-line surveys and assist in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data from evaluation projects.
Collect, organize and analyze data in a wide range of formats and from multiple sources.
Create reports summarizing key findings.
Lead efforts to collect, organize, scrub, validate, and otherwise prepare large data sets from internal and external sources for research projects.
Document processes using diagrams, charts, and narrative text.
Work with the Vice President of Community Impact to develop comprehensive research agenda.
Consult with key internal stakeholders to ensure organizational research needs are met and all data collection and analytics efforts are streamlined and optimized.
Design and conduct various types of quantitative and qualitative research, using advanced statistical analyses and methodologies.
Be an expert on cutting edge research methodologies/technologies including data visualization and business intelligence.
Drive both strategy and tactical execution for data collection and evaluation processes.
Find and analyze community level data, regional data, and publicly available data sets.
Measure, track, and report community outcomes as they relate to organization’s Community Impact Plan. Develop continuing opportunities for community input and feedback.
Collaborate with United Way staff, community partners, and independent researchers to develop strategic tools such as logic models, evaluation plans, and other frameworks
Document data and evaluation policies and procedures and cross train others to ensure backup for functions.
Create custom reports, maintain current reports, and train program staff to build regional and site-level reports to provide regional and site level program data.
Design and lead research requests when needed.
Develop and manage relationships with key institutional partners in pursuit of shared learning with research and evaluation projects.
Facilitate the development and review of data sharing agreements with third parties that increase United Way’s access to relevant information about key populations in our region, as well as to analytical support in gaining insight from data that we collect and produce.
Contribute to grant proposals, reports, and other fundraising efforts related to research and evaluation through writing content, preparing analysis of program performance, and providing context in terms of relevant population-level statistics.
Job Relationships:
The Director of Research and Data Analytics reports to the Vice President of Community Impact and must maintain an ongoing working relationship with the Grants Manager, members of the senior leadership team, and department directors and managers.

*Knowledge and Skills:*
Strong analytical skills, including knowledge in the modeling and analysis of data
Computer Proficiency and Experience: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Adobe, Publisher, Google Programs (Drive, Sheets, and Docs)
Expert level proficiency in Excel, analytical and data visualization software (e.g., Clear Impact, Tableau, Alteryx, etc.)
Experience using survey and interview instruments, Survey Monkey preferred
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and tasks
Mastery of all facets of the research cycle from study design to instrument construction to data analysis and insight generation.
Advanced analytical and statistical techniques to include multivariate analyses, predictive analytics, and modeling.
Demonstrated experience leading large-scale projects delivered on time, within budget and with a high level of quality.

Ability to prioritize, manage and hold oneself accountable for completing multiple tasks both independently as well as part of a diverse team
Education and/or Experience – Bachelor’s Degree or higher from accredited four-year college or university required; economics, statistics or related fields preferred. Relevant education, training and certifications in measurement, program evaluation, statistics and data analytics in the areas of human service, education and or community health. Collective impact experience preferred. Three to five years of experience designing and/or conducting evaluations of programs and interventions at different stages of development in the field of childcare or education and career pathways preferred. Experience facilitating data-informed continuous improvement preferred.
Residency and Travel – Preference is given to applicants who reside in the service area and are available to attend early morning, evening, and/or weekend meetings on a periodic basis, and should be able to travel independently throughout Southwest Virginia.
Language Skills – Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills – Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance required, access to high-speed internet at home required.
