TITLE: Environmental (EHS) Specialist
PLANT: Corporate
REPORTS TO: Director of EHS
This position is responsible for driving day-to-day Environmental performance and works under the guidance of the Director of EHS to ensure compliance with Federal and State EHS regulations, Gibbs EHS policies, and environmental permits. They will audit and review area processes to ensure area EHS requirements are being completed in a timely and thorough manner and review audit results with EHS Department and plant management. They will routinely lead EHS incident reviews and investigate root causes to provide corrective actions in a timely manner. They will review results with EHS department, plant and site management.

Manages environmental permitting and project activities including scheduling, tracking, and planning for environmental assessments, site investigations, feasibility studies, and remedial action plans for Title V Air Permit, KPDES Permit, Waste Water Permits and Hazardous Waste Registrations.
Ensure Gibbs is in compliance with all federal, state and local environmental regulations (air, waste water, water, waste and hazardous waste).
Have working knowledge of all annual reporting requirements of Tier II and Tier III reports.
Develop compliance strategy(s) to meet regulatory and customer requirements.
Responsible for maintaining ISO 14001 certification and coordinating activities as the site EMS representative.
Interpret data and observations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines and advise management accordingly.
Assess environmental risk and evaluates hazardous conditions and recommend engineering and administrative controls, and/or personal protective equipment.
Prepare various reports, including charts and graphs, to determine trends and needs.
Conduct audits to ensure compliance and follows up with appropriate departmental supervisors/managers.
Evaluate industrial hygiene (IH) issues for facility personnel through compliance review, auditing, and IH testing and recommended mitigation to plant management.
Prepare technical documentation for management’s use when dealing with regulatory agencies and other internal/external needs.
Investigate all OSHA recordable incidents, ergonomic injuries and employee complaints.
Document and work with respective plant management on recommended corrective actions, maintain incident investigation records, follow up on and review implemented corrective actions.
Perform and/or coordinate EHS required training as needed (ISO 14001, SWPPP, RCRA, Emergency Response, LOTO, Ergonomics, etc.).
Evaluate hazardous conditions and recommend engineering and administrative controls, and/or personal protective equipment.
Develop, perform and/or coordinate required training as needed.
Demonstrate safe work practices and coaches others in safe behaviors.
Able to work weekends and overtime as required.
Meet all physical and environmental requirements.
Follow all prescribed safety regulations including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment.
Follow all Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality Policy guidelines.
Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition according to established Gibbs 7-S Guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education, knowledge, skills and abilities:
Education: B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Engineering, EHS, or related engineering discipline.
Certifications: Will be required to have or obtain OSHA 30 Hour Certification; CPR Certification; DOT Hazardous Waste Certification; RCRA Hazardous Waste Management; ISO 14001 Auditor Certification.
Experience: 3-6 years preferred, but not required.
Communication: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be an effective public speaker, facilitator, report writer, trainer and problem solver.
Math: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra geometry.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Other: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to contain complete confidentiality, prioritize and manage multiple tasks, be comfortable working in a cross-functional matrix organization, and be a self-starter, capable of working without direct supervision. Will actively participate on EHS Teams. May be required to travel to attend seminars and conferences to keep up to date on issues, trends and required compliance to laws; and able to effectively communicate information both verbally and in written format.
