Position Details

Position Description
The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, School of Medicine and College of Engineering is seeking a part-time design instructor. This position is a one-year appointment as part-time (50-70% FTE) Lecturer with an anticipated start date of fall 2022. Faculty in Bioengineering (Medicine) have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1-June 30).

About the Master of Applied Bioengineering
The Master of Applied Bioengineering (MAB) is a nine-month, full time professional master’s degree program. The program trains students to apply engineering design to address today’s clinical challenges and fulfill the market-based demands of industry and medicine for biotechnology. Students collaborate with world-class faculty from UW and UW Medicine, and local industry partners to transform biomedical research into technologies for improving patient care. Graduates have in-demand skills for work in biomedical industry and translational research.
The ideal candidate will bring a passion for teaching and mentoring. The Design Instructor is responsible for organizing and leading five courses that make up a nine-month series that is the core of the program:

Clinical rotations in which students identify and investigate unmet clinical needs. (One month)
Design series in which student teams select the most significant unmet needs and develop solutions for them. (Three academic quarters)
Full-time capstone design class in which the students finalize a solution to a need in teams. (Two months)
Mentor students and provide resources to support retention and promote student success.

Qualifications
Minimum:
MS (or foreign equivalent degree) at the time of hire. Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, candidates who have teaching experience at the graduate level, including course development and instruction.
Desired:
PhD or MD degree (or foreign equivalent degree). Experience with one or more of the following: instrumentation, signal processing, engineering computation (MATLAB, LabVIEW), prosthetic devices, device fabrication, electromechanical systems, and fluidic systems. Experience with classroom teaching, the Biodesign process, or with nanoscale/molecular engineering and biomaterials is also desirable.
