Duties

Acts on behalf of Medical Center Director and is delegated full authority by Director, Health Administration Services for administrative activities
Interprets VA rules and regulations related to determining entitlement to benefits
Processes administrative issues surrounding beneficiary death, seriously ill cases, elopements, suicides, assaults, deaths on arrival (DOA s), homicides, emergency codes, cost recovery matters, and disasters.
Provides administrative authority and guidance to Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) and clinical staff concerning administrative matters
Coordinates administrative activities with various internal services.
Investigates and resolves complaints, problems, and concerns and provides documentation for information or follow-up
Coordinates patient referrals/transfers to and from medical center
Ensures computer, telephone and other facility system and communication problems are evaluated and resolved or reported
Receives and responds to non-routine patient condition inquiries and other administrative inquiries from concerned veterans, families, visitors, law enforcement officials, representatives from private hospitals, Veterans Service Organizations Representatives, VA Central Office, Congressional offices, military personnel, private physicians, media, and general public.
Determines if release of information is appropriate to news media and public.
Provides compassionate explanation of death and burial benefits to next of kin; assists with procedures on organ donation.
Coordinates with VA Police to enter flags for patients who require an alert, are potentially dangerous exhibit disruptive behavior.
Investigates unusual incidents involving welfare, injury, abuse of patients; loss of personal property
Determines the appropriateness of notifying medical examiner on unusual deaths.
Assumes the role of Incident Commander for Medical Center Director in event of disasters.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: administrative problem solving with clinical staff, coordinating support activities between administrative and clinical staff in a medical setting, working independently, and providing guidance and technical advice on administrative policies in a clinical setting.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
