Overview of Position
The job of Youth Services Assistant (In-House Suspension Assistant) is done for the purpose/s of overseeing students identified as at-risk assigned to “In School Suspension”; documenting student behavior; and providing instructional and non-instructional support to preclude suspension.
Essential Functions
Assists in disciplinary action when appropriate for the purpose of maintaining a safe learning environment.
Assists teachers and other staff as directed, (e.g. in charting students progress toward stated goals, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a written progress report is available to school staff and parents.
Attends staff and school meetings for the purpose of acquiring up to date information for school management.
Implements behavior plans when defined by the referring teacher, administrator and/or counselor for the purpose of developing students’ basic social and interpersonal skills, and building self esteem.
Monitors students during assigned periods for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
Participates with students and other staff in dynamic group process for the purpose of implementing behavior shaping goals.
Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. attendance logs, activity reports, student’s progress reports, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
Provides services for at-risk students (e.g. home visits, first aid, resource identification, etc.) for the purpose of providing families with support.
Provides students on in-house suspension or detention, instruction and schoolwork for the purpose of providing ongoing support in the completion of work assignments.
Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certificated personnel and/or parents in identifying needs and evaluating students.
Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. students, teachers, administrators, parents, etc.) for the purpose of solving problems, providing information and/or directing to other sources.
Serves as a role model, discussing behavioral problems and tutors students in effective relationship and communication skills, for the purpose of ensuring acceptable levels of behavior for students in school and the community.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to assigned School Principal.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: behavior and crisis management techniques; instruction techniques; and alcohol/drug/chemical dependency education and intervention.
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; working with frequent interruptions; communicating in a positive, non-threatening manner; and building effective relationships with at-risk students.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:
(a) Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or (b) Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or (c) Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or (d) Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of work experience with at-risk youth which included behavior shaping and reinforcing appropriate behavior, and skills training techniques in alcohol/drug intervention.

Valid State of Washington Driver’s License
