About WSDOT Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world’s longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world’s widest tunneling project. The Opportunity WSDOT is seeking a motivated individual with strong technical skills to fill a Transportation Engineer 3 vacancy located in Lacey, WA. This position will serve as the Supervisor of Survey Parties, responsible for regionwide survey assistance and development in the Olympic Region (OR). The primary duties of the position include managing survey crews and ensuring accuracy and quality of survey product. In this role, you will also support Land Survey operations in all aspects of the WSDOT program. This position supports the Department’s mission by ensuring highway projects are designed and constructed in compliance with established Department standards. What to Expect This position works in an open office environment, with occasional site visits in the field, with typical on-site hazards including traffic, heights, uneven terrain, and open water. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Supervisor of Survey Parties will:

Schedule, manage, assign, and sometimes participate in Survey Crews’ activities.
Provide supervision, guidance, and training to the survey crews in collecting and processing survey data.
Provide Region assistance of Global Positioning System (GPS) usage as it applies to survey control and data acquisition for project delivery.
Spot check the collected data to ensure quality and accuracy and directs the organization and filing of the data.
Utilize Computer Aided Engineering programs, and other software to format raw survey data into a final format for delivery.
Participate in the development of work plans for projects and then executes the field data collection.
Work with engineers to schedule the crew’s priorities to meet the needs of the OR.
Prepare right of way base maps for project offices; interpret right of way and construction plans.
Calculate boundary lines from deeds and title reports.
Respond to the requests of private citizens, public agencies, developers, private engineers, public utilities, and land surveyors seeking information such as Right of Way dimensions, property ownerships, access control and monumentation.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2, or equivalent, such as a Survey Party Lead.
A Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license for the state of Washington or the ability to obtain licensure within 24 months.
Knowledge and understanding of surveying principles, practices and methods and ability to apply them to complex survey problems to ensure compliance with statutes, industry standards and procedures.
Knowledge and understanding of project schedule and budget management for application to on-time and within budget delivery.
Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver multiple projects involving a variety of resources, support groups and other agencies or businesses.
Strong interpersonal skills to be able to work effectively with project offices, other team members, support offices, consultants, and independently to complete assigned tasks.
Experience prioritizing and handling multiple tasks in a high production, frequently changing environment.
Experience successfully communicating with multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
Proven skills in research to examine, develop and propose alternate solutions while maintaining attention to detail.
Demonstrated proficiency in using software to produce reports and spreadsheets to communicate project development information with internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook to compose professional documentation and reports.
A valid driver’s license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

A two- or four-year degree in survey related studies.

Important Notes

This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
The typical schedule for this position is Monday – Thursday; 6:00am to 4:30 pm.
This position requires a WA State Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license within 24 months of appointment.
Employee may have to travel to an occasional off-site meeting or to attend training. Travel will include occasional site visits in the field.
